Here’s the thing about the things that scare you in your business: They never go away, they just get bigger and badder. If you’re scared to put yourself out there to an audience of zero, it’s not magically easier to communicate with them when they expand to an audience of 1,000 or 10,000 or even 100,000.
Overthinking and over planning (yes, that’s a thing) can paralyze even the boldest of business owners. But the truth is, waiting another month or two—or even years—isnot the solution!
Every successful online business owner started out not knowing the answers, playing it by ear, and learning as she went along.
We all stumble in the beginning. But we figure out our paths and grow more intentional by the day—but here’s the catch, you have to get your hands dirty first.
Here are 5 reasons to get started TODAY, even though you don’t have a website, a newsletter, an opt in or a client… I’ve heard all the excuses, so let’s skip that game and get started.
When you learn how to run a successful online business, you’re creating your own job and your own job security, too.
Are you a maker selling your creations? A freelancer serving your clients? If you learn how to make this happen you’ll be able to gradually perfect your process. If you decide to change the direction of your business someday, you’ll have a framework firmly in place. Self-starters are hard to find, and if you nix the dream of entrepreneurship and head back for corporate waters, you’d be hard pressed to find an HR department who’s not impressed with someone willing to work so hard without any promise of a steady paycheck.
If you’re working full time right now, you are always at the mercy of the company you work for. There is no such thing as job security in 2018 unless you make yourself irreplaceable, and the best place to do that is on your own. Remember that you control the risk when you’re running your own gig.
With your online business, there’s no need to pay for commercial space, inventory, printed paper goods, etc. You can literally use the computer you already own and your kitchen table. (I don’t recommend that, but you can.)
In many cases, the only expenses you’ll absolutely need to invest in upfront will be your domain name, web hosting, and time. Even if you do need to invest in things like inventory and tools (calligraphers, I’m looking at you), just think of how much money you’ll save over selling from a physical location.
If you’re still hung up on the “old school” thought that “it takes five years to see a profit in small business!” stop telling yourself stories. Statistics are not accurately depicting the current marketplace of freelancing + entrepreneurship, and moreover, you’re not a statistic. If you want to be successful, choose to be successful.
Do you want to spend the best years of your life completing a bunch of tasks just to make money for someone else? If you aren’t deeply passionate about your work, you’ll regret not giving your online business a shot.
Waiting to do the work you love only prolongs the inevitable success you will have if you dedicate yourself to your hustle. It prolongs the amount of time you’ll stay stuck in a job you hate, a home you can’t afford, and relationships that leave something out (like kids) because you’re too scared to make the leap, make more money and make a living you love.
At your day job, your schedule probably doesn’t match up to the amount of work you actually need to get done. Most likely, you don’t get to choose when you do your work or the hours in which you’re most productive. Bossman (or lady) says now and that means yesterday, despite the friends/spouse/soccer game/etc. you previously had on your schedule for this evening.
One of the best parts of an online business is the flexibility and freedom. You can travel, take a yoga class in the middle of the day, hang out with your kids, and arrange your work schedule around anything and everything that’s important to you. You can also work within your most productive zone (mornings, late nights, etc.) without stress and guilt.
It’s still work—there’s no denying that but running your own company means you’ll get to spend those extra long lunches with people you love, who won’t always be around, like I did with my friend who passed away two years ago.
At your day job, your earning potential is probably limited. Sure, there’s your salary, benefits, and possibly some promotions over the years. But once you get the hang of running your online business, there’s no limit!
Whether it’s outsourcing, building a team, or scaling your business—there’s always a way to make more if that’s your goal. This reality is just too empowering to pass up, especially today. I have to laugh when I hear new or aspiring business owners talk about health insurance and taxes, because even if you have a day job, you already have those expenses... they’re just wrapped up into your paycheck. Maybe the problem isn’t in making enough money to go out on your own, it’s in learning how to be responsible and manage the money you already have.
So let’s recap: why should you start your online business today?
